Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud said Tuesday that a Riyadh delegation will head to Iraq next week to explore the reopening of the kingdom's embassy in Baghdad.
Saud also told a news conference in the western seaport of Jiddah that the recent resignation of Sunni ministers from the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government will not deflect Saudi Arabia's decision to send the delegation.
"A Saudi delegation will head to Iraq next week to look into when it would be possible to open an embassy in Iraq," Saud told reporters. "The Saudi Embassy will care for the interests of both countries."
The trip to Baghdad will be the kingdom's first concrete step toward opening a diplomatic mission in Iraq, a measure the US administration has sought from Iraq's neighbors as a sign of support for the Iraqi authorities.
