Suicide car bomber strikes Iraqi army checkpoint

A suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi army checkpoint south of Baghdad on Saturday, killing at least 12 soldiers and wounding 30, police said. The explosion occurred just after 5 p.m. near the gate of the army unit's headquarters in Iskandariyah, 50 kilometers south of the capital, provincial police spokesman Capt. Muthanna Khalid said, giving the casualty toll. He said the checkpoint was run by the Iraqi army's 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, in an area dubbed the triangle of death because of frequent Sunni insurgent attacks. Iraqi security forces have faced a series of recent attacks by militants who accuse them of collaborating with US-led forces.
