Syria announced the launching of its "Free Media City" on Sunday, the Syrian News Agency, SANA, said on its Web site. However, it remains unclear how free the media will be. It quoted Deputy Information Minister Taleb Qadi Amin as saying that the media city is an outcome of the government's desire "to develop media performance and to use true information in the service of the country and citizens." Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has a hi-tech media city where large media organizations have opened bureaus. The Syrian zone will be located in the Damascus International Fairgrounds and will spread over 65,000 square meters. The area will be divided into 56 blocks.
