Syria releases activist after five-month detention

Syrian authorities released a political activist after a five-month detention, a Syrian human rights organization said Saturday. Ali Sadek al-Barazi was released Wednesday, even though a military court had ordered his release on Nov. 11, Abdul-Karim Rihawi, head of the Syrian Human Rights League, said in a statement. The statement said that al-Barazi was detained on July 28 after he was summoned by military security, but didn't give the reason for detention. Barazi, 40, is a former political prisoner who spent about 15 years in jail between 1982 and 1997 for belonging to the banned Communist Work Party.
