'Turkey is a diplomatic channel between Israel and Syria'

Turkey is operating as a diplomatic channel between Israel and Syria, a Turkish diplomat stationed in Damascus told the London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper Wednesday. The diplomat, who was unnamed, said that Turkey has been an "unofficial" mediator for a number of years, with the assent of both Israel and Syria. His comments were published as Defense Minister Ehud Barak was scheduled to meet in Ankara with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
