Turkey: Military authorized to launch cross-border offensive on Kurdish rebels

Turkey's prime minister on Friday said the government had granted its military authorization to launch a cross-border offensive against Kurdish rebels based in northern Iraq at any time. There was no sign following the announcement by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the military was gearing up for an immediate attack on guerrilla positions in Iraq. Turkish officials have often said they have the right to attack those hideouts, raising fears in past months that a cross-border operation was imminent. Erdogan's announcement followed communication in recent weeks between the military and the government concerning the scope of a possible operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
