Turkish President Abdullah Gul and his Syrian counterpart stressed the need to achieve peace in the Middle East in a meeting in Damascus Saturday, the official news agency said.
Gul, who was in Syria to attend celebrations proclaiming Damascus the "Capital of Arab Culture 2008," said upon his arrival that he would discuss with President Bashar Assad "developments in the region as well as bilateral relations," according to the SANA agency.
It was Gul's first visit to Syria since assuming power in Turkey in August.
