US Marine killed in fighting west of Baghdad

A US Marine was killed in fighting west of Baghdad, the military said Thursday. The Marine, who was assigned to Multi National Force, West, was killed Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, a vast Sunni insurgent stronghold that shares borders with Syria, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, according to a statement. The Marine's identity was not released pending notification of relatives. At least 3,381 members of the US military have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
