US official holds talks with Lebanese leaders on military cooperation

A senior US defense official has met with Lebanon's top leaders to discuss military cooperation between the two countries and has reiterated American commitment to bolstering the Lebanese army. US Undersecretary of Defense Eric S. Edelman met separately with President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister-designate Fuad Saniora, Defense Minister Elias Murr and parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri, according to a US Embassy statement Saturday. Edelman and Lebanese officials discussed plans to strengthen the US-Lebanon bilateral defense relationship, it said. In his meetings Saturday, Edelman "stressed the US commitment to enhancing the Lebanese Armed Forces' capabilities," the statement said.
