US soldier killed in Iraq ups monthly toll to 38

A US soldier was killed by small-arms fire in Baghdad and northeast of the capital, the military said Sunday, raising the monthly American death toll to 38. A Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier was killed and another was wounded Sunday when insurgents targeted a security patrol in a western segment of the Iraqi capital, according to the military. The statement gave no more details about the attack, which came as US and Iraqi forces have launched a security sweep aimed at stopping the sectarian violence in the city of 6 million people. The deaths raise to at least 3,122 members of the US military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. Thirty-seven US troops have died so far this month.
