US troops detain 24 in operations targeting al-Qaida in Iraq

US troops detained 24 suspected al-Qaida-linked militants Sunday in operations targeting propaganda, bombing and smuggling networks nationwide, the military said. Fifteen of the detainees were captured in raids near the northern Sunni city of Samarra, including a wanted individual believed to be involved in courier and media cells for the terror group as well as attacks against US-led forces, according to a statement. US troops also captured an individual accused of involvement in a car bombing network and association with al-Qaida leaders on the western half of Baghdad, in addition to four other suspects, the military said, adding the other detainees were seized near Youssifiyah, south of Baghdad, and the northern cities of Daband-i-Khan and Mosul.
