Yemen official: Al-Qaida figure killed in shootout

A Yemeni government official says an al-Qaida figure who masterminded attacks including one targeting the US Embassy in San'a has been killed in a shootout with police. Hamza al-Kaaiti was one of 23 convicts who escaped a San'a prison in 2006. The official says he's also organized a mortar strike on the US Embassy in March. The attack missed its target but killed a security guard and wounded 13 students at a nearby school. At the time, Yemeni officials blamed al-Qaida and named another suspect, Hamza al-Dayan, as the man who fired the mortars. He remains at large. The official says al-Kaaiti was killed along with four other al-Qaida suspects Monday night in Yemen's Hadramawt province.
