Five members of a Colombian gang operating in Israel were charged on Wednesday with a string of sophisticated robberies.
The suspects, two men and three women, were arrested last month in Tel Aviv after their alleged offenses were covered on the Channel 2’s Kolbotec investigative television program.
“They arrived in Israel as tourists, and conspired to carry out sophisticated property crimes including the thefts of jewelry and gold from stores,” police said.
In several of the incidents, some of the suspects distracted a store clerk, while other members of the ring stole expensive goods, police said.
The suspects allegedly carried out reconnaissance on targets. In one case, the suspects allegedly ambushed two residents of Beersheba who withdrew tens of thousands of shekels from a bank.
The victims entered a vehicle to leave the bank, but were blocked by one of the suspects, while a second suspect slashed the vehicle’s back tire, police said. The car drove on, but became stranded by the puncture. As the two robbery victims stopped to change the tire, one of the suspects reached in to the car and stole the bag of money, police said.
