One youth was killed and another was seriously injured when their vehicle smashed into another car in Kfar Saba over the weekend following a police chase.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle spotted a police checkpoint set up to test drivers for alcohol outside of the village of Tera, near Kfar Saba early on Friday, police said.
“The vehicle was driving erratically, and our officers signaled for the driver to pull over. For an unknown reason, he took off at high speed. Officers pursued him,” a police spokesman said.
The chase continued for several kilometers, with the escaping vehicle flying through red lights. The vehicle then turned into Kfar Saba, drove through another red light and struck a car that was driving through the intersection, police added.
The fleeing car’s passenger, 19-year-old Idan Musai of Kfar Saba, was killed in the accident.
The driver was rushed to the Beilinson Medical Center in serious condition.
Magen David Adom paramedics pulled both men out of the wreckage, and attempted to revive Musai before declaring him dead on the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle was lightly injured.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
