The Council for Higher Education in Israel has instructed Bar-Ilan University to freeze its statistics program for the 2012-2013 school year.The move came after an international accrediting committee found shortcomings in the university’s Statistics Department, including a lack of lecturers and learning material that is not up-to-date.Bar-Ilan is the only university in Israel where students are able to earn a degree in statistics and mathematics, as opposed to studying statistics as part of a social sciences program. According to a university spokesman, registration for its statistics program waned in recent years, and Bar-Ilan consulted with the Council for Higher Education about suspending it.Soon after, the international accrediting committee was brought to Bar-Ilan to examine its Statistics Department and found that it did not meet its standards.The spokesman said Bar-Ilan is freezing the program for one year in order to examine the situation and find a solution to the department’s enrollment problem. One possibility, he said, was to separate the degree from mathematics.
