Social justice protests began in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem on Saturday night, the official kick-off for what organizers hope will be another summer of massive protests.
The protests were given full police authorization. Several roads were closed to traffic because of the protest in Tel Aviv, including Rothschild Blvd. and Ibn Gavriol Street.
Thousands of protesters were marching from Habima Square to the Tel Aviv Museum compound. Among those scheduled to speak at the culminating rally was Stav Shafir, one of the leaders of last year's Rothschild Boulevard tent city protest.
In Jerusalem, protesters were marching from Gan Hasus to Paris Square, across from the Prime Minister's Residence.
The Haifa protest march was scheduled to begin at Meirhoff Square and end with a rally at Ben Gurion Boulevard.
Thousands rallied in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square last month, and in cities around the country, in the largest social justice protest held since last summer’s wave of cost-of-living demonstrations. The rally was held in conjunction with “May 12” protests in cities around the world to mark the beginning of the social justice struggle in Spain one year ago.
