A new immigrant who made aliya from the United States earlier this year was caught this week allegedly trying to smuggle dozens of illegal commando knives  to Israel in a shipping container delivered to the Haifa port.
In addition to the 82 commando knives, the 55-year-old suspect also allegedly tried to smuggle in dozens of bottles of alcohol and two pianos that he did not declare to customs.
The man claimed that he had ordered the shipping company to send him different personal items, and the delivery of the knives was a mistake.
On the customs forms he filled out for the shipment, the resident of the northern town of Ma’alot-Tarshiha said that the container contained personal items he was bringing to Israel form his previous home in the US.
Customs authorities confiscated the knives and passed the container's other contents onto tax authorities for further processing.
