Al-Qaida leader warns Sunnis against Iraq gov't
09/24/2008
The purported leader of an al-Qaida-dominated insurgent umbrella group in Iraq has warned pro-government Sunnis that the Shiites and US forces will one day turn on them. Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq, issued Wednesday a 37 minute audio message on militant Web sites marking the 2nd anniversary of his organization's founding and calling for former insurgents to rejoin the fight. The US has described al-Baghdadi as a fictitious character used to give an Iraqi face to an organization dominated by foreign al-Qaida fighters. Violence dropped sharply in Iraq after many Sunnis turned on their erstwhile al-Qaida allies and formed "awakening groups" allied with US forces.
