New Zealand newspaper publishes Muhammad drawings
02/04/2006
A New Zealand newspaper became the first in that country Saturday to reproduce Danish caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, saying it was standing for press freedom and would not be intimidated by threats of trade boycotts or other reprisals. The Dominion Post newspaper in New Zealand's capital, Wellington, published the drawings on an inside page in company with an article reporting international reaction to them which were first published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September last year. Some European newspaper reprinted the cartoons this week. The Post Dominion is also the first newspaper owned by major Australian publisher John Fairfax Holdings Ltd. to reproduce the 12 drawings which include a depiction of Muhammad wearing a turban shaped as a bomb.
