France hosts meeting of EU foreign ministers to discuss Gaza situation
12/30/2008
France is hosting an urgent meeting of EU foreign ministers to discuss the crisis in Gaza and push for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said most of the EU's 27 members will send representatives to the talks Tuesday evening in Paris. France holds the EU's rotating presidency, and is calling for an end to the fighting in Gaza. Israeli warplanes have pounded Hamas targets, and the UN says more than 360 Palestinians have been killed, most of them members of Hamas security forces. Nadal, the French spokesman, said the population in Hamas-ruled Gaza needs humanitarian aid and that border points should be reopened so it gets through. The European Commission too is renewing its plea for a cease-fire.
