Iran summons EU ambassadors over de-listing of opposition group
02/04/2009
Iran summoned ambassadors from European Union countries to protest an EU decision removing an Iranian opposition group from its terror list, the country's official news agency reported on Wednesday. The report in IRNA said the Iranian deputy foreign minister in charge of Europe, Mehdi Safari, expressed "deep regret" over the EU's January decision to delist the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran. The group was founded in the 1960s and helped followers of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini overthrow the Shah in 1979. The group later fell out with Khomeini, and has claimed that thousands of its followers were killed, imprisoned or forced into exile. It launched a campaign of assassinations and bombings against Iran's government.
