J'lem remains top stop for foreigners not locals

Jerusalem continues to attract the largest number of tourists of any Israeli city, although Israelis continue to prefer to vacation elsewhere in the country, according to tourism statistics released by the city this week. Nearly 200,000 tourists spent a night in a Jerusalem hotel in January, up nearly 20 percent from the same number in January of last year, and even 5% higher than the first month of the record-breaking tourism year in 2000, with Tel Aviv and Eilat coming in second and third place respectively. Israelis preferred to vacation in Eilat and the Dead Sea, with Jerusalem in a distant third place, the statistics showed.
