Thousands rally across US for immigrants' rights
03/25/2006
Thousands of people across the US protested against legislation cracking down on illegal immigrants on Friday, with demonstrators in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta and other places staging school walkouts, marches and work stoppages. The US House of Representatives has passed legislation that would make it a felony to be in the United States illegally, impose new penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and erect fences along one-third of the US-Mexican border. The Senate will begin debating its own immigration legislation Tuesday. The proposals have angered many Hispanics. Friday's protests were largely peaceful, authorities said. But a demonstration in Los Angeles led to fights between black and Hispanic students at one high school.
