The London Times reported Saturday that the US claimed to have offered Syrian President Bashar Assad an end to his country's diplomatic isolation and a improvement of ties with the United States. The American deal was reportedly contingent on Assad meeting a number of US demands, including preventing armed terrorists from crossing the border into Iraq, ceasing involvement in Lebanon, cooperating with the UN in its investigation into the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri and agreeing to try any people found responsible by that investigation. The London paper reported that the proposal conveyed through a third party. A source close to Assad said, according to the article, that the president, who has come under US scrutiny lately, especially with regard to aiding and abetting the Iraq insurgency, will reject the offer.
