Education Minister Yuli Tamir announced Wednesday that the Education Ministry would provide the NIS 30 million necessary to overturn the budget cut which would have led to a cut of 12,000 class hours in high schools and the firing of 600 teachers. Ran Erez, chair of the Secondary School Teachers' Association, commended Tamir for her decision. "This is the first time in recent years that a politician not only makes promises, but also fulfills them," he said. In a meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Olmert said that education was a top priority for the government, and asked Tamir to prepare a work plan listing education system priorities by the end of July.
