Report: 'Smart' ID cards to become available in 2 weeks

"Smart" identification cards were set to become available to Israeli citizens in two weeks, Army Radio reported Monday, about two year after the Knesset approved regulations for pilot operations for a biographic database.
Under the framework of the decision, Israeli citizens will be able to replace their current ID cards and passports with a "smart" ID, which are supposed to decrease the possibility of identity theft, the army-run radio channel reported. In order to obtain an more secure identity card, Israeli citizens will reportedly have to undergo fingerprinting and provide a photograph of the face to be included in an Israeli biometric database.
According to the report, the project has been delayed due to legal disputes, format changes and internal labor disagreements.
