Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by telephone with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday and expressed Israel’s gratitude for the Obama administration’s decision to block a United Nations resolution calling for a conference on nuclear disarmament in the Middle East.

News of the phone call was first reported by Israel's Channel 10.

The US decision to block a final resolution came at the end of a month-long review conference on the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

There were signs that the conference appeared headed for failure on Friday after its members were unable to overcome disagreements on an atomic weapons ban for the Middle East and other issues.

After four weeks of negotiations on ways to improve compliance with the pact, there was no consensus among its 191 signatories. US Under Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller announced there was "no agreement" and accused some countries of undermining the negotiations.

Gottemoeller did not name any countries but diplomats said she was referring to Egypt.
