Emmy-winning actor Powers Boothe, best known for his powerhouse performances in westerns like Tombstone and HBO’s Deadwood, has died at the age of 68.

The veteran character actor passed away in his sleep on Sunday morning, his spokesperson told Variety.

The Texan’s stage and screen career spanned five decades with his Emmy win coming in 1980 for his portrayal of cult leader and mass murderer Jim Jones in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones.

Garnering a reputation for playing the villain, Boothe was known for his roles in movies including Tombstone, Sudden Death and Frailty, and played Senator Roark in Sin City. Arguably his most famous villainous turn was as Cy Tolliver, the saloon owner in HBO’s western series Deadwood.

Boothe also starred in popular series 24, and 24: Redemption, as Vice President – and later President – Noah Daniels. He was also known for his role as Lamar Wyatt in Nashville, for which he was nominated for a Satellite Award in 2012.

Out of his recent outings, Boothe played the role of Gideon Malick as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting the role in 2012s The Avengers and reprising it on ABCs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Remembering his close friend, actor Beau Bridges tweeted: “It’s with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband.”

Sin City director Robert Rodriguez weighed in: “I loved working with Powers Boothe. A towering Texas gentleman and world class artist. Rest In Peace, amigo.”
