Histadrut chief Eini threatens general strike

Histadrut Labor Federation head Ofer Eini threatened Tuesday a general strike in protest of the Finance Ministry's attempt to delay the implementation of the human resources company law, Army Radio reported. According to Eini, the Finance Ministry suggested to postpone the implementation of the law to 2008. The point of contention between Eini and the ministry is clause 21a of the law, which stipulates that a freelance or contractor employed by the same employer for the duration of nine months or longer will be considered a regular employee regardless of his status as contractor or freelancer. The law would provide better security and protection for freelancers and contractors who find themselves working for the same employer for a long period of time but are still denied the privileges given to standard employees.
