After a number of years on the sidelines of club basketball, Tzvika Sherf returned to the limelight late last year when he replaced Oded Katash as Maccabi Tel Aviv coach.
The immediate effect he had on the team's fortunes was a testament to his years of experience in the game.
Sherf is also the current coach of the Israel national team and until recently was a major Israeli television personality.
The 56-year-old was destined for coaching stardom from an early age. Although as a teenager he began playing for Maccabi Tel Aviv's second string side, by the age of 20 he had already begun coaching the club's youth team.
Sherf moved up through the ranks, becoming assistant Maccabi coach in the early '80s and head coach from 1983-86.
Sherf's current tenure as national team coach began in 2005, but he has also held the position from 1984-87 and 1991-97.
An accomplished traveler, Sherf coached at a number of clubs abroad including both Aris and PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece and Russia's Dynamo Moscow.
In all he has won 10 Israeli championships and reached two European finals.
