Alex Averbukh proved again on Thursday afternoon why he's widely regarded as Israel's greatest athlete.
The double European Pole Vault champion, cleared 5.55 meters and 5.65m in his first attempts at the World Championships in Osaka and booked his place in the final which will take place on Saturday.
The 32-year-old will be competing in his third World Championship final and will be looking to go one place better than he did last time around.
Averbukh won the silver medal at Edmonton in 2001, two years after claiming the bronze at the 1999 championships.
He will, however, have to improve dramatically on his season's best if he's to have a chance of winning a medal of any color on Saturday.
The Israeli has only jumped 5.70m this year, over 20 centimeters less than the season best of favorites Brad Walker, Bjorn Otto and Steven Hooker.
