Basketball: Shamir to stay at Hapoel Jerusalem

Hapoel Jerusalem coach Dan Shamir has insisted he will not quit his job, despite guiding the team to an embarrassing 53-point loss to Unics Kazan in Russia in the ULEB Cup on Tuesday. The team continued its trend of losing every away game in both the BSL and Europe this season with the 98-45 loss, although Hapoel has won all its games at Jerusalem's Malha Arena. Shamir, who took charge of the team from Erez Edelstein before the start of the 2006/07 season, said he is determined to put things right. Asked by Army Radio if he was considering leaving Hapoel, Shamir said: "I have never thought about moving in this direction... I will do what needs to be done to fix the situation." Jerusalem faces Ironi Ashkelon at home in the BSL on Saturday and Shamir said this was now his main focus. He did, however, admit that the game in Kazan was one of the worst results his team has had. "The Russians controlled the game throughout the court, from the first minute to the last," he said.
