The founder of a Boston baking company is trying to establish Israel's first pro baseball league.

On the afternoon of Friday, June 22, 2007, Israelis will finally get a chance to root, root, root for the home team. Larry Baras, the founder of a baking company in Boston, is putting forth all his efforts to establish Israel's first professional baseball league, to be called the Israel Baseball League.
Baras has assembled an all-star lineup of advisers, including former Boston Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette; former United States ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer; preeminent baseball economist Andrew Zimbalist; and Marvin Goldklang, a limited partner in the New York Yankees.
Baras is working with the JNF in an effort to build more baseball fields around the country. He has mentioned Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Beersheba, Beit Shemesh and Eilat as possible homes for the six inaugural franchises.
Baras hopes the IBL will attract interest among former North Americans, who will then help raise the popularity of the game and the talent level among native Israelis.
