Eurobasket women: Israeli women pull out win in Latvia

“This is an amazing achievement,” Israel coach Eli Rabi said.

Israel’s women’s team took a significant step toward a third straight qualification for the EuroBasket tournament on Tuesday, beating Latvia 71-66 on the road.
The blue-and-white took the lead in the first period and maintained a slender margin throughout the encounter.
Latvia tied the score at 66-66 with one minute to play, but the national team would score the final five points of the night from the free-throw line to improve to 2-0 in Group B after thrashing Serbia 93-65 in its opener last Thursday.
Shay Doron followed up her 20 point performance against Serbia with 22 points on Tuesday, with Liron Cohen and Liad Suez Karni adding 11 points each.
“This is an amazing achievement,” Israel coach Eli Rabi said.
“We beat a team that played in the Beijing Olympics and we are proud and happy.
“We have a very special team and the girls have a great character.
We hope to finish in the top two places in the group and after this win we feel we can even finish first.”
The top two teams in the group, which also includes Romania, will advance to next summer’s European Championships, with Israel to visit the Romanians in its next qualifier on Friday.
