Anya Gostomelsky set a new Israeli record in the women's 100 meter freestyle on Wednesday evening, clocking a time of 55.46 seconds at the Israeli National Championships at the Wingate Institute.
The 26-year-old improved her previous best by 81 hundredths of a second, which was set at the European Championships more than three years ago.
Gostomelsky's new career best is better than the International Olympic Committee criteria time for the Beijing Games, but as the Israeli championships are not considered as an event in which Olympic criteria can be met, the Israeli will need to record the time once more to book her place in China.
Another Israeli record was set in the 200m breaststroke, with 17-year-old Nastasia Korotkov finishing in a time of 2:33.81 minutes. The men's 200m breaststroke was won by Tom Be'eri in 2: 14.36m.
The most exciting race of Wednesday night was the men's 200m butterfly final. Meir Hatzbani beat out Alon Mandel by just 18 hundredths, ending the race in a time of 2: 01.34m.
The women's 200m butterfly final was also a tight affair with Amit Bachar winning her first ever national title in 2:21.45m, 26 hundredths faster than silver medalist Avigail Tal.
George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago, who won the bronze medal in the 200m individual medley at the Athens Olympics, claimed the 100m freestyle race on Wednesday, clocking a time of 50.22 seconds. Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or was crowned as Israeli champion after finishing second to Bovell in a time of 50.60s.
Anat Zimin won a national title at the unbelievable young age of 14, winning the 50m backstroke in 31.25s. Guy Barnea, who has already secured his place at next years Olympics, claimed the men's 50m backstroke in a time of 25.95s.
In the only relay race of the day, Hapoel Jerusalem's women's team won the 4x200m freestyle, clocking a time of 8:42.24m.
