France, a team that won a silver medal in last year's International Ice Hockey Federation Division I championships, ran roughshod over an Israeli team in this year's Division I, Group A event in Amiens, France by a score of 9-0.
Israeli 'keeper Evgeny Gussin faced 40 shots on goal in the opening two periods, allowing five goals, including a power play goal in each period. The French opening goal came on a power play at the 3:45 mark, and they added two more before the stanza ended. They were held at bay until the 33:18 mark, but finally scored with Israel being shorthanded two men.
Boris Amromin replaced Gussin in the final frame and faced an additional 15 shots for a combined total of 55 SOG. He allowed four goals in the final frame, two of them short-handed goals, while France was serving penalty minutes.
Israel was only able to raise a meager offense, with a game total of nine shots on goal, and yet again, the players' lack of full game conditioning and short handedness in the defense corps, cost them dearly in the third period.
Israel's last shot at staying in Division I will take place Sunday when they face Great Britain, the other team that hasn't won a game as yet. A win is a must for Israel to avoid relegation back to Division II. GBR only needs a tie.
In all likelihood, France will be facing off against Germany to see who moves up to the Premier Division.
