Ironi Ashkelon reaches State Cup quarterfinals

Maccabi Haifa sacks coach Elad Hasin.

Ironi Ashkelon became the eighth and final team to advance to the quarterfinals of the State Cup on Thursday and was rewarded with a showdown with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Ashkelon beat National League side BC Habika’a 78-70 on the road, but will have a far tougher time progressing to the last four after being drawn to visit the yellow-and-blue in the next round on January 9.
Desmon Farmer had 29 points for Ashkelon, with Paul Delaney scoring 23 for Avi Ashkenazi’s Habika’a team, which is currently tied for second place in the National League.
Second division-leader Hapoel Tel Aviv, which surprised Hapoel Holon in the last 16, was drawn to host Maccabi Haifa in the quarters.
Haifa sacked coach Elad Hasin earlier Thursday, naming his assistant Ami Nawi as the interim replacement.
Haifa has lost six straight BSL games, but defeated Maccabi Rishon Lezion in the cup on Wednesday under the guidance of Nawi, with Hasin sitting at home ill with the flu.
In the other quarterfinals: Hapoel Jerusalem hosts Barak Netanya and Maccabi Ashdod welcomes Hapoel Gilboa Galil.
The 12th round of the BSL begins Saturday night with Hapoel Holon hosting Bnei Hasharon.
