Kattash takes over as coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv

Former star player Oded Kattash will take over as coach of Israeli basketball champion Maccabi Tel Aviv. The 32-year-old Kattash will replace Neven Spahija, a Croatian who coached the team to a league title in his first season, the club said Tuesday. Kattash has just two years of coaching experience, running Upper Galilee in the top league. The high scoring point guard played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 1990s and was close to signing with the New York Knicks, but the deal was stopped because of the 1998 NBA players strike. After a season in Greece in 2000, Kattash retired with a knee injury.
