Maccabi Rishon tops Givat Shmuel

Rishon overcame an initial deficit to beat Givat Shmuel 88-79 in the final BSL Matchday 17 game.

Lee Matthews led six Maccabi Rishon players in double figures with 24 as his team came from behind to defeat last-place Maccabi Givat Shmuel 88-79 on Monday night in Or Yehuda in the final BSL Matchday 17 game. Third place Rishon improved to 11-5 and increased its lead in the standings over Ironi Nahariya to 1 1 /2 games, while Givat Shmuel dropped to 2-13. Givat Shmuel was neck and neck with Rishon for most of the game. The score was tied at 22 after 10 minutes and at 46 at halftime before Givat Shmuel went ahead by nine early in the third. But Rishon came back and tied the score at 62 when John Gilchrist hit a three-pointer on the first play of the fourth quarter. Moran Rot gave Rishon the lead for good with 3 1 /2 minutes remaining when his trifecta made it 76-75. Matthews added another three as part of an 11-1 run that put the game away. Ryan Sydney added 17, Gilchrist finished with 12 points and six assists and Rot scored 11. Or Eitan and Omar Sneed had 10 each. Sneed also tallied 10 rebounds and six assists. Jay Straight paced GS with 18, Wayne Wallace scored 16 and Kenny Whitehead finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
