Itai Magidi cut nearly six seconds off of his Israeli record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Tuesday night at a meet in Rames, France. Magidi, 25, ran the distance in 8 minutes, 28.38 seconds, to finish second to the winner, Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad (8:28.25) of France. Magidi set the previous mark (8:34.12) last year in Sacramento, California. His time meets the criteria to compete in next year's world championships in Osaka, Japan and brings him within four seconds of the time needed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The race was Magidi's last big event before next month's European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.
