Mashiah atop the standings at windsurfing championships

Nimrod Mashiah got the windsurfing World Championships in Perth, Australia off to an ideal start on Monday, moving into the lead after the first day of action and opening a gap over Israeli rival Shahar Zubari.The 23-year-old Mashiah finished second in the first race of the day before winning the second to lead the overall standings with Poland’s Piotr Myszka, with both surfers on three points.Zubari will be disappointed with his first two races, finishing in sixth and 16th, leaving him in 21st place overall with 22 points.However, the 25-year-old will still be confident of erasing the deficit, with eight more races still to come over the next five days before next Sunday’s Medal Race.The ISAF World Sailing Championships are the second of four events which will determine who will be Israel’s one and only representative in the windsurfing competition at the London Olympics.Zubari currently leads the battle by seven points to one after finishing fourth in September’s European Championships.Mashiah ended the competition in Burgas, Bulgaria in eighth place, but was deducted two points in an Israeli sailing association disciplinary hearing after being found guilty of illegally hampering Zubari’s progress in the Medal Race of the Europeans.Gil Cohen and Vered Buskila got the women’s 470 Class competition in Perth off to a frustrating start on Monday, finishing the day’s two races in 24th and fifth positions.Cohen and Buskila, who are expected to represent Israel in London, are in 13th place overall after the opening day.
