Tzipi Obziler took another big step towards the world's top 100 on Tuesday morning, defeating Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the Sony Ericsson International tournament in Bangalore, India.
Obziler's victory over Kudryavtseva (95) was her third against a top-100 player in the last week. Two more wins for the Israeli in India will take her into the top 100 for the first time in her career.
Obziler, who climbed to No. 117 in this week's WTA rankings, will face Vasilisa Bardina (55) in the second round after the Russian defeated Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, on Tuesday.
"Obziler felt very good before the match, but began it very poorly," Obziler's fitness coach, Yuval Higar, said from India. "She was extremely determined after the first set, and won in the end despite not playing her best tennis. She knows that to continue progressing in the rankings she needs to win these kinds of games in which not everything always works out."
