Israel's swimmers got off to a flying start at the 11th European Short Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, on Thursday. The 4 x 50 meter medley relay team broke the Israeli record in the morning heats and also in the final, finishing in eighth position. Guy Barnea, Miki Malul, Ehud Segal and Shay Livnat clocked a time of 1 minute and 37.18 seconds in the final, 2.79 seconds behind the winning German team.
Also Thursday, Anya Gostomelsky booked a place in the women's 100m backstroke final. The 26-year-old swimmer finished her semifinal in second position in 58.94 seconds and qualified automatically for Friday's final. Frenchwoman Laure Manaudou clocked the quickest time in Thursday's semis, finishing the race in 57.78 seconds.
Despite the excellent results, both the relay team and Gostomelsky have still yet to meet the criteria to qualify for next years Olympic Games and will need to record similar achievements in the long course European Championships in the Netherlands next March to secure their place in Beijing.
