Two of Israel's best medal hopes will get their competitions under way on Monday when the sailing events begin in Qingdao. Udi Gal and Gidi Kliger, perhaps the delegation's best hope, will sail the first two races of the 470 Class and will be hoping to get off to a good start ahead of the week of racing. In the women's 470, Nike Kornecki and Vered Buskila will be looking to quickly dispel the bad memories from the Athens Games, in which they finished in the 18th position. The windsurfing contests will also begin on Monday, with Shahar Tzuberi a realistic medal hope in the men's event. The expectations from Ma'ayan Davidovich in the women's competition aren't high, but a good start could change all that. Monday will also be a busy day in the pool with Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or and Guy Barnea to race in the 200 meter freestyle and 100m backstroke semifinals respectively in the morning session and the grieving Alon Mandel taking part in the heats of the 200m butterfly in the evening. In the tennis, Israel's stars will play their first round matches, which were postponed from Sunday due to rain. Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich face Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra and Shahar Pe'er plays Romanian Sorana Cirstea. There was good news on the tennis front on Sunday after No. 1 seed Ana Ivanovic pulled out due to injury, freeing a place in the singles tournament for Israel's Tzipi Obziler. Also Monday, Doron Egozi will shoot in the 10m air rifle competition and the always cheerful fencer Delila Hatuel takes part in the women's foil.
