Shahar Pe'er ends year by breaking in to WTA top 20

Pe'er climbed in the rankings as a result of the fall of former world number one Lindsay Davenport.

Shahar Pe'er broke into the top 20 of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career on Monday morning. The 19-year-old moved up one place to number 20 and joins Anna Smashnova as the only Israeli female tennis player to achieve this feat. Smashnova, who is currently ranked 65th, holds a career best ranking of 15, which will be well in the reach of the phenomenal Pe'er in 2007. Pe'er, who played her last WTA tournament of the season two weeks ago in Linz, Austria, climbed in the rankings as a result of the fall of former world number one Lindsay Davenport. The 30-year-old American plummeted down the rankings to number 25 after not taking part in last week's Sony Ericsson Championships and not defending the points she collected last year in the season finale.
