Anna Smashnova was upset by local favorite Tathiana Garbin 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday in the second round of the Internazionali Femminili Di Palermo in Italy. The Israeli No. 2, who continues to slip in the rankings and is down to 63, was seeded fifth at the event, at which she reached the semis in 2000. Smashnova was hoping to gain some valuable ranking points on one of the last clay-court events before the WTA Tour moves into the North American hardcourt swing leading up to the US Open. The last clay event until September - the Budapest Grand Prix - takes place next week. Smashnova is the defending champion at Budapest.
