Shahar Pe'er moved comfortably into the third round by beating Italy's top player Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 6-2 for her first consecutive wins on tour since Wimbledon.
Pe'er, seeded 11th, has struggled to recapture her hardcourt form from the start of the year, when she reached at least the quarterfinals in six of her first seven events, including the Australian Open.
After the clay and grass seasons, she'd won only two matches in three tournaments on the North American hardcourt circuit leading up to the US Open.
She was joined in the third round by China's Peng Shuai, who was leading 14th-seeded Katarina Srebotnik 6-1, 4-2 when the Slovenian retired because of illness.
