Tennis: Pe'er through to third round of US Open

The Israeli defeated Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-2, 6-0 at Flushing Meadows.

In other action in the second round of the women's competition, 17-year-old American Melanie Oudin pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament, stunning No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to set up a third-round match against 2006 champion Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova (29) beat American Christina McHale 6-2, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Sharapova's Russian compatriot and top seed Dinara Safina came from behind to beat Kristina Barrois of Germany, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3.

In the men's competition Thursday night, 2003 champion Andy Roddick pounded 13 aces, didn't face a break point until the final game and easily eliminated 81st-ranked Marc Gicquel of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round.

Three other US men also advanced Thursday: No. 21 James Blake, No. 22 Sam Querrey and 276th-ranked qualifier Jesse Witten.
