World hockey championships in Metula cancelled

The under-18 world hockey championships that were scheduled to be held at the Canada Center in the northern town of Metula have been cancelled, the World Hockey Federation has announced, citing security concerns and recent Hizbullah threats to shell the northern border. According to the organization's director, it was not possible to hold the tournament in Metula since governments of two of the participating teams - New Zealand and Switzerland - warned its citizens to refrain from visiting the border region, Israel Radio reported. Other national teams that were to play in the event were Romania, South Africa, Turkey, Bulgaria, Armenia and Israel.
