BMI begins flying to Tel Aviv

The maiden flight took place despite a disagreement between the Transportation Ministry and the British Airports Authority.

UK airline BMI's maiden flight to Israel landed at Ben-Gurion Airport on Friday, despite a disagreement between the Transportation Ministry and the British Airports Authority on a second Israeli carrier's slots at London's Heathrow Airport. Nigel Turner, BMI's CEO, arrived on Friday's flight, accompanied by journalists from Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands. The Transportation Ministry had previously said Israel would not approve BMI's flights to Israel until a bilateral civil aviation agreement was implemented and a second Israeli carrier - either Arkia or Israir - started flying regularly to London with convenient slots.
